Wildfire sky, Margaret Lowers Abramshe, Saint George UT
Images of the orange skies over San Francisco inspired me to create this quilt about the earth's changing climate. Scientists agree the earth's temperatures are rising at an alarming rate. I imagined a young boy in a world where an orange sky filled with ash is the norm. The damage from mankind's use of fossil fuels is putting our children's future in peril. Earth needs our attention and our commitment to a sustainable future.
Whole cloth commercially printed from artists' images. Painted with acrylics, pigment sticks, liquid watercolor and other mediums. Free motion and stitched on a stationary machine.

Cairn Chasm, Karin Lusnak, Albany CA
The spiral with its connotations of growth and natural progression is a favorite motif. I see the spiral pattern not only as a symbol of enlargement but also as a symbol of inclusion. Each one of us is connected to family, to friends, to society and to our world in one enchanting, spiraling dance. Cairn Chasm flowed from my unconscious. My original idea, an ocean view, involved multiple spiraling forms. As this spiral took shape, I could not stop adding to it until it was so large that I felt as if I was falling down a well or moving through a tunnel. For months it remained unfinished on my design wall until one day, I grounded it by adding the blue fabric. Immediately, I was able to complete the piece.
Cotton and silk. Machine pieced. Hand and machine quilted.

This quilt is part of a series of square quilts that, feature colors used by famous artists. Photoshop was used to create the design using four rectangles of fine color stripes. I obtained the color stripes for this quilt by scanning images of paintings by Joan Mitchell.
Digitally printed whole cloth polyester top, polyester batting, and cotton canvas back. Machine quilted.

This gorgeous triple petaled orange day lily was already in our Southern California garden when we moved in over 30 years ago and has continued to bloom every spring/summer since. It has been dug up, divided, replanted several times and still it thrives. Life goes on, things happen, the future is uncertain, but some things in nature you can always count on...
This is a whole cloth quilt painted in acrylic textile paints on PFD cotton, free motion q quilted in silk and polyester threads.

My mind and hands went wild interpreting the brilliant natural colors and graphic patterns of these of these beautiful and important insects. Many varieties are endangered due to the loss of their precious habitat and collection by beetle hunters.

Miraculous Emergence, Lys Axelson, Big Bear City CA
The delicate yet hardy Monarch Butterfly annually migrates thousands of miles from Mexico to Canada to breed and lay its eggs. Though it is one of the longest lived butterflies, it can take up to four generations to make the entire trip. Returning to the mountains of Mexico or wintering on the Pacific Coast of North America, it has adapted to cold temperatures proving to be one of the most amazing and awe inspiring butterflies in the world.
Monarchs are in decline due to loss of habitat and use of pesticides ultimately killing the milkweed plants that they rely on for egg laying and survival of its caterpillars.
Cotton fabrics, Lycra lame fabric, Seed beads, Acrylic paint, wire, cotton, silk and polyester threads. Hand painted butterfly wings, both sides. hand beading of caterpillar. Free motion quilting.

Sunset Moth of Madagascar, Sue Siefkin, Modesto CA
The Sunset Moth, native to Madagascar, is so beautiful that it was initially classified as a butterfly in 1773. Its 3" iridescent wings, dripping with color, were featured in National Geographic magazine in a micro photograph by Charles Krebs. After receiving Mr. Krebs' permission to create an art quilt inspired by his photograph, I spent the next 10 years mulling over the best way to depict the creature in fiber. Finally, sequestered in my studio during COVID 19, ideas began to flow.
Nonwoven spun-bonded polyester, iridescent acrylic paint, felt, assorted polyester threads. The ribbon-like scales or petals that form the wings are attached dimensionally.

Just Breathe, Geri Patterson-Kutras, Morgan Hill CA
I originally made this as a small piece called "By the Lake." I loved it so much that it was always my intention to make it in a much larger format. It was one of those pictures you take that remains in your subconscious beckoning you to revisit the scene for new inspirations. We were staying at Black Butte Ranch in Sisters, Oregon for the annual quilt show. There's a small lake at the Ranch where you can rent little row boats to paddle around on warm afternoons. I took the photo at the end of the day when the color crayon little boats were all returned, moored for the day, floating on the water grateful for the opportunity to rest. There was a magical tranquility in the air, the heat of the mid-day was giving way to the cool breezes of the evening
Hand dyed and commercial fabrics. Original design created using machine, blanket stitch appliqué.

Challenged to use only one color & black, I began this piece with a small scrap of fabric which reminded me of California's rolling foothills after a period of much needed rain. I use improvisational piecing techniques when creating my abstract compositions. One single line or shape - here a scrap of fabric - often serves as the starting point or inspiration. Working to create a flow & focal point in my design, I took frequent photos as I developed my overall plan for this piece. The title honors Whistler's "Arrangement in Grey and White," also known as “Whistler's Mother."
